Who is Uncle Dan? |

BY BARBARA C. UNELL, AUTHOR AND PARENT EDUCATOR
Uncle Dan is the name of a kind and compassionate man of great leadership named Daniel L. Brenner who taught his nieces and nephews to respect their family and take responsibility for their education by his thoughts, words and deeds each day of his life.
When he died in 2002, I found his 1914 report card from 5th grade elementary school in Kansas City, Kansas on top of his dresser – 90 years after he had received it from his teacher, Lois Huggins!
I instantly knew from reading the “Home Report” side of this heirloom that listed subjects, such as Helping Mother, Helping Father, Manners, Habits of Kindness, Books Read, Hours Worked, Punctuality, and Truthfulness and Honesty, that the “Home Report” had influenced my Uncle Dan, as had his parents’ teaching the subjects on that side of the report card. He had, in turn, taught these subjects to me, as well as my cousins!
A coalition of community and national leaders in education, psychology and parenting agree: the "Home Report" is a mentoring tool for parents and a motivation tool for children that is as relevant today as it was in 1914. So we updated it, turned it into a poster and renamed it "Uncle Dan's Report Card,” to make it as helpful as possible for 21st century parents, teachers and children – the current and future "Uncle Dans" of the world.
